South Bucks Midweek Cycling Newsletter - October 2023
South Bucks Midweek Cycling Newsletter - October 2023
Sorry about the long gap since the last newsletter; a mixture of not much to report and busy doing other things, but there is quite a bit going on now.
If you see a cycling related article, TV or radio programme that you found interesting and can send me a link to it, please do.
There is currently a bug in Cycling UK's software so this may appear without pictures. If you want to see it in all its glory you can view it on our page of the Cycling UK website.
Feel free to share pictures of your exploits on our Facebook page or send them to me for possible publication.
Thinking of joining a ride for the first time? We have a helpful page on our website which should answer most of your questions, but if you want advice please get in contact.
If you spot any interesting articles, cafe changes or want to contribute your observations, please let me know.
The next committee meeting will be on Tuesday 7th November, so if there is anything you would like to raise with us please let me know by late October.
Safe cycling,
Peter Robinson
South Bucks Midweek Cycling kit
David Ullathorne has been in contact with the designer at Kalas and after many iterations the committee has agreed on the design which will be available to order shortly. Kalas has sent a generic sizing kit, not in our design, and a printed sample jersey front. These are available to see and try on at Chiltern Velo Cafe in Hawridge from Tuesday the 26 th September to Friday the 6th October. Please note they are closed on Mondays. Ladies and Gentleman’s samples are available downstairs in the corridor to the bike workshop.
Chiltern Velo are not charging the club so it would be nice if you buy a tea or coffee and cake whilst you’re there. For those that can’t get to the Café over the next 2 weeks please refer to the Kalas Size Chart, which is pretty accurate. Note: Jackets and Gilets tend to come up a little large, so useful for extra layers or if you prefer a tighter fit, go down one size. Kit will be available to order from the 6 th October.
Full details and the web shop log in details will be distributed on or before the 6 th October. You choose your items and pay Kalas for them and they will than be delivered about 6-7 weeks later in one shipment to David's house. We will then arrange collection at a Coffee Pot or other social event.
DON’T ‘DO’ LYCRA?
Please consider adding a club Gilet or Jacket to your cycling wardrobe. Greater visible presence for the club is a huge help towards the club maintaining and growing its membership.

WhatsApp groups
We have made some changes so please read to the bottom.
There are WhatsApp groups for each of the pace groups; EP, M, MF and FL which are used to circulate planned routes and last minute changes. To be added to a WhatsApp group, contact the Ride Coordinator as follows:
EP - Chris Loader, Brian Jackson M - David Ullathorne, Nick San Juan MF - Peter Robinson, John Kane FL - Richard Jennings, Bryce Taylor
I can't give out their email addresses but if you don't already know it, email me and I will pass the message on.
David Ullathorne has created an umbrella group South Bucks Midweek Cycling UK which we can use for announcements to members of all the pace groups, particularly for events like the Christmas Lunch, AGM, proposed holidays etc. These should reach all group members and cannot be replied to, so they won't get mixed up with general chat or ride specific messages. I think this is a very useful addition to communication, but of course we will still be sending out emails and newsletters.
Please add your full name to your profile and if possible a picture; there are a lot of anonymous phone numbers at present.
Route link addition to the Midweek Rides List
Our webmaster and Rides Secretary Phil Jarvis has added an extra column to the rides list, next to the leader, where ride coordinators can add a web link to the intended route. If routes are planned on GarminConnect, Strava, Plotaroute, RidewithGPS or one of the many other route planning websites then a link can be added so that the route can be viewed, and if required downloaded to a GPS device.
At present it is only the MF group publishing the link, but it does make the route easy to find rather than trawling through WhatsApp messages. We are hoping that this will make it easier for people to join or leave the route part way. Leaders still can and do have to change the route sometimes on the day.
Circular rides near you?
Would you like circular rides at a starting place near you? We know that not everyone can spare the whole day to ride and some would like greater certainty about the total length of a ride. John Kane has demonstrated a demand for circular rides from Wendover, but what about other locations in the heart of South Bucks? If you would be interested in circular rides please contact me so we can gauge demand.
We now have a Safeguarding Officer
Cycling UK has asked us to have a Safeguarding Officer on our committee, as an understandable response to the abuses that have emerged in some sports organisations. This is not something that affects only children, though clearly they are particularly vulnerable. We have been very fortunate that member Paul Marchant has agreed to take on this role and introduces himself below:
"With over 20 years as a school designated safeguarding lead I have taken on the role of safeguarding officer for South Bucks Midweek Cycling group.
Much of this is common sense but if you see or experience anything that makes you feel uncomfortable (no jokes about tired legs please!) then please let me know. Actions such as inappropriate touching or suggestive comments fall into that category.
If you have any questions please email me. paulmarchant2409@live.co.uk"
Misbourne Greenway
You can see the latest update on the Misbourne Greenway in the attachment from Sustrans below. It looks like steady progress is being made, but none of it will be open until all of the work is finished, hopefully later this year.
Cycling Accidents - what to do
Unfortunately several members have had accidents while cycling over the summer, due to driver errors. Fortunately they haven't resulted in broken bones, but still considerable trauma, wrecked bikes, time unable to ride and the enormous hassle of dealing with insurance companies and trying to find a suitable replacement bike. The picture is of Richard Waring's bike not Julie's.
Julie Willis has summarised her advice as follows:
* Keep your helmet on if you’ve hit your head.
* Cycling UK cannot help you claim if there aren’t any personal injuries but minor ones can count and if not, unless the driver informs their insurance company, which is often unlikely, even if you get the driver’s insurer’s details, it’s rare that you can make a claim on the driver’s behalf so best to call police.
* get photographic evidence of damage to car, bike, rider, clothing, and witness statements
* get to A&E either by calling an ambulance or your own way, whichever’s quicker. Do not be taken home by the driver. Ideally, get someone to collect your bike or get driver to take it to the local bike shop.
* keep receipts of proof of purchase of bike before damage and receipts of anything you’ve replaced since.
If you have any advice or experiences to share please get in touch.
CTC magazines from 1946 onwards!
Rita Jackson has CTC magazines from 1946 onwards which she is offering to a good home. These would make fascinating reading as social history, the evolution of magazine design as well as for the descriptions of cycling at a time when few had cars and many cycled everywhere. Have a stack by your bed to send you to sleep with cycling dreams!

Christmas Lunch - save the date, 6th December.
Christmas seems a long way off, but not in terms of booking a venue. We have booked a room with a bar at Chartridge Park Golf Club for Wednesday 6th December. I will be producing an online booking form as I did last year. It worked well last year, but if you don't do things online don't worry, someone else can fill it in for you. The bar will be open from midday with lunch served at 1pm. Rides coordinators should please make Chartridge Park Golf Club their lunch venue that day. Please feel free to invite your spouse or partner to join us and meet your cycling friends. There is plenty of parking for those wishing to drive.
The booking form including the menu choices will be available soon.
Spring holiday in the Cotswolds 2024
Twenty four took part last year and had a good time, with some cycling to and from Cirencester but most driving and carrying the luggage of the riders. We are enquiring about available dates and costs for the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester and the Fire Service Training College in Moreton in Marsh.
More details to follow.
New Metro Bank account
I know this isn't a topic to set the pulse racing, but David Ullathorne and I have managed to open a MetroBank account for the club, so that we can collect money for events etc without having to use personal accounts. Our old account could not be managed online but the new one of course can, with David and I authorised to make payments, such as the deposit for the Christmas Lunch.
Pub and café news
The Red Lion in Stratton Audley has closed and is up for sale.
Aylesbury Cycling Club have been using The Wandering Kitchen at Wet n Wild at Berinsfield so that should be worth trying.
I have also spotted the Snug Cafe and Farmshop at Bishops Court Farm, Dorchester. I haven't tried it yet but it looks promising. It is near where Lily's in Dorchester used to be.
If you spot any new places to to visit please let us know.
Shimano Dura-Ace and Ultegra Crank safety warning
Thanks to David Gregory from reporting that:
Shimano have issued a product recall for a safety check on selected bonded Dura-Ace and Ultegra 11-speed HOLLOWTECH II road cranksets produced between June 1, 2012, up to and including June 30, 2019, for a possible bonding separation issue.
Click on the link below to see if you have a crankset that could be affected.
Tubeless tyre corner
I have been riding my Enigma Etape on tubeless tyres for nearly 3 years now and have rarely had to do more than add a bit of air by the roadside. I was caught out on one occasion by neglecting to top up the sealant, and after five months, finding that that was no liquid left to seal a puncture. I thought it was time to check the Schwalbe Pro One front tyre I fitted 6300 miles ago in June 2022 and look inside the casing. There was very little liquid left and a lot of solidified sealant. It really is quite tough stuff and forms an extra layer below the tread, so probably adds a bit of extra puncture protection.
I have previously topped up sealant with a syringe through the valve as instructed by the makers of the Caffe Latex sealant. Unfortunately the sealant attacks the plunger of the syringe they supply, so after a few uses it seized up. There are no doubt better syringes available, but as I didn't have one, I decided to just add a puddle of sealant directly into the tyre casing before refitting it and it worked fine. I have had a few accidents with the syringe method resulting in sealant spraying over me, the bike and the garage floor, so I think I will keep it simple in future.
