South Bucks Midweek Cycling Newsletter - October 2022
The summer is over, but that golden light on trees changing from green to gold, brown and red makes this a lovely time of year to cycle. It is hard to know what to wear though as the temperature changes from day to day and during the day.
Feel free to share pictures of your exploits on our Facebook page or send them to me for possible publication.
Thinking of joining a ride for the first time? We have a helpful page on our website which should answer most of your questions, but if you want advice please get in contact.
If you spot any interesting articles, cafe changes or want to contribute your observations, please let me know.
Kind regards,
Peter Robinson
Cafe & Pub News
Richard Dunn reminded me that CuriosiTEA which was at the Old School Community Hub, Ivinghoe until the trustees refused renewal of their lease despite a petition signed by 2,700 people, has relocated to Pitstone Memorial Hall by the playing fields. I can't vouch for the gluten free cake that Richard likes, but it is good to know that the cafe lives on.
Hector recently led a ride with 11's at The Spotted Dog in Flamstead. There used to be nice little cafe there before it closed and changed hands. Hector reported that there were only two pieces of cake left to share between three! There could have been ugly scenes with a larger group! It would be useful stop, but maybe worth a phone call beforehand. Hector had better luck at the Red Lion, Marsworth where the landlord is a keen cyclist and was very welcoming.
We weren't so lucky at the Bull & Butcher in Ludgershall. It was serving food earlier in the summer but now Wednesday lunchtimes are "Drinks only". We were "Saved by the bell" though; The Bell in Chearsley!
The Cart Shed cafe in Preston Crowmarsh has closed recently. Apparently the same team are behind The Ox Shed cafe in Wallingford OX10 9QF so I will give that a try sometime.
Did you know that there is a Facebook page dedicated to Cycle Coffee and Cake Stops? Click on the link below to see the Cycling Cafe Map. We probably know most of the ones in our area but it can be useful in unfamiliar territory. If you spot any missing ones you can submit them via their Facebook page.
Trail Rides
Paul and Viviane are leading Trail Rides on some Wednesdays. They are not on the Rides Schedule because they decide on the Monday if and where to go, so you need to be on Paul's email list. Contact Paul at pthorne.greystones@gmail.com.
Midweek Christmas Lunch - save the date
The committee has decided to go ahead and organise Christmas lunch at Chartridge Golf Club on Wednesday 21st December with drinks from 12:00 and lunch about 13:00. In these days of rising prices the cost is a bargain at £23 for three courses. It is one of the few occasions when members from all the different riding groups can meet so we do hope you will support it.
How can we get more women on wheels?
My inbox wasn't overwhelmed by the response last month, but thanks to those who did comment. One suggestion was that circular rides might be better if women were uncomfortable cycling back from the lunch stop alone. Another was that women only rides could be tried. They may be good ideas but we need to hear from women who would like to ride with a group but ...
Please contact me and I can put you in contact with other female members. It would be very easy to start a WhatsApp group or maybe meet at a Coffee Pot.
Cilla Gosnell 6 July 1935 - 12th September 2022
The funeral of Cilla Gosnell took place at the Chilterns Crematorium on Tuesday 11th October. Dozens of her South Bucks cycling friends were present to say farewell to Cilla who was a founder of the South Bucks Midweek group and tireless organiser of many events and holidays. Cilla leaves John, her husband of 63 years, children Alison, Peter and David and her grandchildren. Our condolences go to John and all her family at this sad time. John David gave this eulogy to Cilla which was much appreciated by friends and family.
"Like Cilla, I'm a lifelong cyclist. I like to think that I’m speaking on behalf of the tens, hundreds, possibly thousands of cyclists who have benefitted from Cilla's efforts for them over the past 40 years.
Cilla was already declared Britain's national champion cycle tourist in the 1970s. She went on to be a great innovator of events for cyclists, She played a major role in the Golden Beeches weekends, to which people came from over the country, and overseas, to enjoy our Chiltern lanes. She invariably designed the routes of many rides, sought out and often booked venues for elevenses and lunches and was always back at the HQ serving behind the counter, having baked and prepared much of the food.
She was the instigator of winter indoor picnics. She booked the village hall venues, arranged helpers, and transported food, notably her super soup. She was the prime organiser of our annual holidays. She spent weeks beforehand working out rides in such remote counties as Lincolnshire, digging out refreshment venues and often booking our stops in the most rural areas.
But her most lasting innovation are the Midweek rides, these days enjoyed weekly by 80 or so riders from all over our area. She started them in the 1970s, planning the routes and keeping attendances. She led many of them in the early days, and thereby hangs a tale.
Cilla was not Speedy Gonzales on a bike, (she wasn't the right build) neither did she have a loud voice. At the start, if you missed her "We're setting off" you had to ride like blazes after her, because she'd gone off at a heck of a rate, pounding her big top gear.
My wife Wendy called Cilla "a one off". She was. We're so grateful for what she accomplished in her quiet, modest, way. Rest In Peace wonder woman Cilla, you've earned it."
Excercise surprise!
Michael Mosley's "Just one Thing" series on Radio 4
In this episode, Michael reveals how the part of your workout that often feels easier - running downhill after a brutal run up to the peak, or lowering down weights rather than lifting them up - is one of the quickest ways to improve your strength and enhance your workout. It’s the flip side of a lot of movements you’ve already been focused on. To find out more, he speaks to Prof Tony Kay at the University of Northampton who delves into the bizarre benefits of Eccentric Exercise. He reveals why the muscle-lengthening phase of exercise is more effective than the muscle-contracting phase… and how lengthening your muscles is the key to stronger muscles, bones, a healthier heart, and could even help burn more calories than a seemingly tougher workout when you’re finished.
HS2 Small Dean Lane cycle path
Thanks to John Ingold for letting me know about this handy little diversion around the HS2 site on the A413 near Wendover. Small Dean Lane, Wendover has road closed signs but ignore them as a short stretch of cycle path has been created around the work site allowing you to continue along Small Dean Lane to join Dunsmore Lane. From the pictures that John sent, which I haven't been able to include here, the path is about 6m wide, rolled to a smooth finish and as one might expect, strongly fenced.
Road works and closures
As you will have noticed there are many road closures in our area due to HS2 and East West Rail as well as those for Thames Water, fibre broadband and even occasionally road repairs. Some help is at hand however, in the form of a website where all the various utilities show their road works and closures so you can check if a ride that you are planning will be affected. The map is quite complicated as it does show a lot of detail, but it has been useful to see when some of the HS2 road closures have been in place and then lifted when more permanent arrangements like traffic lights are in place.
Pink & Lily junction update
Ray reports that:
Bucks County (I assume) have cut back the trees at the top of Wardrobes, so at least the sign can now be seen, the case is now closed so no hope of moving the sign.
Long ago but not far away ..
While clearing his late parents house in the Hastings & St Leonards area Tim Carpenter has found a pile of South Bucks CTC magazines from the 1950s and asked if anyone would like them. I have said yes although I believe we have a complete set of The Beech Leaf in a loft somewhere. I will have a look at them for items of interest but would anyone be interested?
C2C Diary
Attached is an account of a C2C ride made by Aylesbury CTC rider Martin Knibbs and his friend Tarun Shome. They took their own bikes and carried their own luggage on the ride from Whitehaven to Sunderland, travelling to the start and from the finish by train. Taking bikes on UK trains is always a gamble and requires a certain amount of faith, luck and charm it seems. It does also limit the size of group, but it would still be my choice. They did the ride in just two days so they must have slept well after day one! The account got my juices flowing for doing the ride; I would need a gravel bike with wider tyres, but why not?
Beryl Burton : Britain's Greatest Athlete
Many thanks to Tony Barnard for letting me know about this talk which is part of Tring Book Festival and takes place on Sunday 6th November at 7:30 pm.
Join author and journalist Jeremy Wilson, as he makes the case for long ignored Cyclist Beryl Burton.
He will be in conversation with Michael Broadwith, the fastest rider to travel from Land's End to John O'Groats by bike.
A night, not just for cycling fans but for all of you who love to celebrate achievements against all odds.
This is an in-person event in Tring and can be watched in the venue or watched from a live virtual stream wherever you are.
Jeremy's book will be available to buy and be signed at the event.
The Midlife Cyclist
Many thanks to Phil Jarvis for recommending this book, The Midlife Cyclist by Phil Cavell. Phil says "I listened to it as an audio book and really liked it, and am in fact listening to it for a second time. He is quite a compelling speaker and I found the subject matter really interesting. It’s quite in depth and technical in places but still very easy to listen to." An audio book would be good for those who do turbo trainer sessions. I have ordered it from the library and it looks like Buckinghamshire Library has two copies. Cycling is great exercise but not complete exercise and I do supplement it with Pilates and stretching. I will be interested to read about the benefits of weight training and other exercise.
